About the Role
We’re looking for a Director of Engineering to lead our software teams through the next stage of growth. You’ll manage multiple engineering teams spanning backend, frontend, and AI, and partner closely with product, design, and data science to ensure we deliver production-grade, secure, and impactful generative AI applications.
You’ll bring strong technical and architectural judgment to guide system design, evaluate trade-offs, and ensure we make the right long-term technology bets.
This role is ideal for someone who has seen 0→1 and early scale, knows what “great” looks like, and introduces the right level of process and maturity without slowing velocity.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
- Lead and inspire engineering teams across backend, frontend, and AI.
- Define the technical vision and long-term architecture for scalable, secure systems.
- Partner with product and data leaders to translate priorities into actionable plans.
- Shape the engineering operating model — introducing structure thoughtfully as we grow.
Execution & Delivery
- Act as the quarterback: anticipate blockers, align stakeholders, and keep teams moving effectively.
- Drive predictable, high-quality delivery while maintaining flexibility for innovation.
- Oversee development of production-grade AI applications, balancing speed vs. stability.
- Evolve operational excellence — CI/CD, monitoring, testing, and automation — at the right pace for our stage.
Scaling Teams & People Leadership
- Mentor and grow engineering managers and senior ICs, enabling greater autonomy and leadership.
- Build org structures and ways of working that support scale without bureaucracy.
- Attract and retain top engineering talent while fostering a collaborative, inclusive culture.
Innovation & Technical Excellence
- Stay current with AI advancements and evaluate opportunities to strengthen our products.
- Provide architectural guidance on distributed systems, data pipelines, and generative AI workflows.
- Foster a culture of experimentation, innovation, and technical rigor.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience leading engineering teams through 0→1 and early scaling phases.
- 10+ years in software engineering, with 5+ years leading managers and ICs.
- Strong technical and architectural judgment across backend, distributed systems, or AI-driven applications.
- Proven ability to balance velocity with long-term stability and introduce scalable practices thoughtfully.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills with cross-functional influence.
- Experience leading full-stack teams and delivering production-grade products.
Bonus Points
- Experience in healthcare technology, particularly with data integration standards (FHIR, HL7).
- Background in scaling engineering orgs from startup through growth stage.
- Contributions to open-source projects, research, or technical publications.
- Deep expertise in cloud-native architectures, microservices, and high-throughput system design.
Compensation for this role is based on market data and takes into account a variety of factors, including location, skills, qualifications, and prior relevant experience.
